How Many Calories Do Wines Have?
Should we worry that the wine we drink occasionally could affect our silhouette in any way? How many calories are actually in a glass of wine? These are just two of the questions we have been proposing to answer in the following lines. Well, yes, the wine contains calories. Alcohol is generally a consistent source of calories, and excessive alcohol consumption favors weight gain.
Wine is a drink made only from water, alcohol and grapes. The process begins by crushing the grapes, continuing with the addition of the yeast that will activate the fermentation step; yeast turns sugar and oxygen from juice into ethyl alcohol. Water is obviously free of calories, fat or carbohydrates, and the grape aroma is a small percentage of the total wine. Sugar grains turn into alcohol so that all food values come exclusively from alcohol. The rest depends only on the metabolism of each.
A glass of wine can perfectly complement a meal, but when we take care of our bodies we have to keep in mind how many calories the wines have. These vary depending on the type of wine: how much alcohol or sugar it contains. The highest calorie wines are usually the ones with the highest alcohol content.
Alcohol has 7 calories per gram, compared to carbohydrates (sugar), which have 4 calories per gram. This indicates that some sweet wines may have less calories than other dry wines for example. However, a dry wine purchased from the supermarket may have an alcohol concentration that exceeds 15%, which means that in a glass we have about 175 calories .
How many calories do the wines have?
The more alcohol you drink, the more calories there are. If we want to lose weight, we must pay close attention to the alcoholic beverages found in our diet. A glass of wine at a dinner is not a tragedy, but few are limiting to just one. The more alcohol a wine has, the more calories it will be. Dry wine, with less alcohol has the least amount of calories, while sweet wine, with a lot of alcohol, is the most caloric. Wines produced in Europe usually have fewer calories, because the law does not allow producers to add too much alcohol.
Generally, 100 ml of white wine contains between 70 and 90 calories, and in most restaurants the wine is served in 125 ml, 175 ml or 250 ml glasses. So, for a simple calculation, a small glass of white wine has about 100 calories, one medium 140, and one big 200.
Red wine has about 70 calories per 100 ml. The more alcohol it has and the sweeter it is, the more calories are added. For example, a 175 ml red wine glass with 13% alcohol can reach up to 160 calories, and a 250-ml glass can have 228 calories.
Rose wine has between 70 and 80 calories per 100 ml, being the least caloric. For a simple calculation, you should know that 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories and 1 gram of sugar 4 calories.
The fullest in calories wine is the alcoholized / dessert wine. It can have 20% alcohol or even more. Alcoholized wines can be dry or sweet and are always served in 60 or 85 ml small glasses. For example, a glass of desert wine served in an 85 ml glass with 15% alcohol can have about 88 calories, and a wine with 20% alcohol around 96 calories.
