The wait is over, so here’s the most dangerous state you may want to avoid. Alaska may have one of the lowest population densities in the country, but it’s also the most unsafe place to live. It has 838 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, which is 55 more than New Mexico and 360 more than Michigan.
Despite its staggeringly high rate of violence, Alaska is among the only 14 states that saw a drop in 2020, although its 3.4% decline is not as substantial as that of New Mexico’s own drop. Still, the state’s violent crime rate of 398.5 is more than double that of the national rate.
Most major crime happens in major cities, with Anchorage having 1,171 violent crimes. The Anchorage metro area houses slightly more than 40% of the state’s population but experiences about 60% of all recorded violent crimes.
