8. Hilaree Nelson, 49
Hilaree Nelson was a legendary ski mountaineer who made a career summiting the world’s highest peaks — and skiing down them. She was The North Face Athlete Team ambassador, and in 2018 she was named National Geographic adventurer of the year after climbing and skiing down Papsura, commonly known as the Peak of Evil, in India and then repeating the adventure on Denali in Alaska.
A mother of two, Nelson was the first woman to climb Everest and Lhotse within 24 hours as well as the first person to ski down the Lhotse Couloir. She disappeared on Sept. 26, 2022, while on an expedition in Nepal, and two days later, her death was confirmed.
