2. New Mexico
- Population:Â 2,117,522
- Violent crimes (per 100,000 people):Â 778
- Homicides: 164
Despite ranking second among the most dangerous states in America, New Mexico is one of only two states that had an annual decrease in its violent crime rate of 6.5%. It has also seen the greatest improvement of the 10 states. However, New Mexico is still one of the most dangerous states in the US.
One of the main reasons would be that there are 778 reported violent incidents for every 100,000 people. Plus, there are also high property and vehicle theft rates in the state, as well as more package theft incidents than in the rest of the country.
Gallup is the most dangerous city in the state. In 2021, it had 1,992 reported violent crimes for every 100,000 residents, most of which were aggravated assaults.
