5. Louisiana

  • Population: 4,657,757
  • Violent crimes (per 100,000 people):  639
  • Homicides: 734

Louisiana is in the middle of the list of the most dangerous states in the US. It has the 5th highest rate of violent crime, but what weighs more is the fact that it has the highest homicide ratio per 100,000 people.

In fact, this dangerous state has been leading the nation in murders for more than 30 years. On top of this, its violent crime rate increased by more than 16%, which is double the national average increase.

New Orleans is definitely the city where most violent crimes happen: 1,144 incidents per 100,000 people. Given that over 1 million folks visit this place during Fat Tuesday celebrations, it’s surprising that New Orleans doesn’t feature in the list of the most dangerous Louisiana cities. Instead, Alexandria, Hammond, and Opelousas are considered the most dangerous.
