Michigan comes in 10th place on our list of the most dangerous states in America. As in many US states, the greatest concentration of violent crimes takes place in Michigan’s most populous cities. While the state itself doesn’t have more than 500 violent crimes per 100,000 individuals, it’s Detroit that sees 1,088 per 100,000.
For instance, the Detroit metro area accounts for nearly 40% of all violent crimes in the state. This city had 328 homicides in 2020, a 17% increase over the previous year and the first time it has surpassed 300 since 2016.
Over the last year, violent crimes have increased by 9.3% across this dangerous state. However, most violent crime rates have decreased since 2009. The only exception is that of physical abuse: incidents have jumped from 4,733 to 7,235.
