South Dakota may be one of the least crowded states in the US, but it’s also one of the most dangerous states that you’ll want to avoid. With 501 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens, the home of Mount Rushmore is surpassed by only 7 states.

This state saw a staggering 25% increase in violent crimes in 2020, the second-highest of any state. But there’s more that makes this place one of the most dangerous states to live in. Unfortunately, South Dakota recorded a colossal 135% increase in the number of homicides. Only 17 homicides were reported in 2019, while in 2020 there were 40.

Sioux Falls is the most populous city in South Dakota and also has one of the highest crime rates. There were 121 physical assaults, 555 aggravated assaults, and 5 murders in 2020. But it’s Mitchell, a relatively small city with about 15,000 residents, that has the worst rates in South Dakota. According to FBI statistics, 573 property crimes and 81 violent crimes were reported in 2018.
