Stephanie Grisham worked for five years in different roles as a senior aide to Donald and Melania Trump. In her book “I’ll Take Your Questions Now” she reveals interesting facts about her life and the time she spent in the White House. 1. Melania and Donald Trump obsessively read their own press.
We already knew about Mr. President’s joy to read every little thing written about him, but it seems like Melania Trump shares the same hobbies as her husband. Can you imagine that she even set up Google Alerts to notify her? Isn’t it crazy?
When you are a public figure, it’s completely normal to deal with both good and bad advertising. Spending time to read EVERYTHING doesn’t seem like a good idea. The reason we are so impressed to find out about Melania’s obsession is her stoic presence. In her function as a first lady, she hardly smiled and was perceived as a very confident woman, and was also hard to bother. She left the impression that she didn’t care at all about all the negative comments.
According to Grisham’s book, it was just the role she played. Behind the scenes, she was a whole different person, who was dealing with self-acceptance and a lack of confidence.
Grisham wrote: “No detail was overlooked, nothing missed her eye.” Grisham used to receive daily texts from the First Lady, telling her about how she should respond to international press articles.
2. The Secret Service gave her the ‘nickname’ Rapunzel
Grisham writes about her experience at the office with Melania. She says that the First Lady was working remotely long before the pandemic started. She used to wake up late, around 10 a.m., and do her work directly from her room.
She was seen in the office rarely, only when she had no other choice but to be present: “When we warranted, we would have in-person meetings, but those generally took place in the Map Room across the elevators to the residence. There we would plan out schedules, respond to pressing queries, and discuss goals. Other than that, the first lady kept to her rooms in residence.”
She was called “Rapunzel” because she always stayed in her tower, refusing to descend.
Melania Trump also spent a lot of time on self-care. She used to sleep 10 hours per night to make sure she could deal with her duties during the day.
3. Ivanka Trump was called “The Princess” by Melania
According to Stephanie Grisham, there was always tension between Melania Trump and her stepdaughter, Ivanka. Grisham wrote that the reason was Ivanka’s desire to always be in the spotlight at public events.
For example, when Ivanka wanted to join the president at Buckingham Palace and meet Queen Elizabeth, Melania put her foot down and insisted that Ivanka and her husband shouldn’t join her and Donald Trump. She didn’t want them in the spotlight. Instead, the two were seen watching from the windows inside Buckingham Palace, while Melania was happy spending time and laughing with the Queen.
Melania used to call Ivanka “the princess” because she was always spoiled by her family, which made her way through politics easier.
4. She was angry about Donald Trump’s alleged behavior
Over the years, Donald Trump has been accused multiple times of infidelity. The most popular scandals that took place because of his alleged behavior involved pornstar Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen MacDougal.
Grisham writes that Melania was very affected, and she distanced herself from Donald Trump, even at public events where they were seen together.
In the book, we have a different perspective on Melania Trump. We discover that she was so upset when she found out the rumors about her cheating husband that she even wished Donald Trump would be punished by the aggressiveness of the press. Grisham wrote: “Mrs. Trump called to let me know that she wanted one of our military aides to escort her throughout the Capitol because the floors were slippery.”‘; “I laughed to myself because I’d seen the woman navigate dirt roads in her heels.”
The reason behind this request was that the First Lady wanted her husband to be seen with a handsome younger man. She wanted to humiliate him on every occasion that she had.
Melania used to do everything she could just to make Trump angry and suffer, as she did because of his behavior.
5. “I really don’t care. Do you?”
In “I’ll Take Your Questions Now”, Stephanie Grisham dedicates an entire chapter to Melania’s famous jacket. Melania wore it to visit an immigrant intake center in Texas. The problem was that on the back of the jacket was written the following message: “I really don’t care. Do you?”. In the book, Grisham doesn’t really explain why the First Lady chose to wear that jacket on the trip to – and from – Texas. However, she describes how shocked she was when she saw how Melania reacted to all the criticism she received during that period. Melania seemed confident throughout the entire time and handled the situation very well.
Nobody understood why she chose to wear such an ignorant message to such an important event. She was supposed to be in Texas to support the immigrant center, not to deliver a piece of information with such an implication. It was not the time or place to take the spotlight off the matter at hand.
On the way back to the United States, Grisham and Melania Trump discussed the whole controversy created by her lack of judgment. Grasham was surprised that Melania wasn’t affected at all and that if she were to go back in time, she would probably have done it the same way.
The First Lady suggested putting on a circle with a line through it over the “don’t” and turning the message into: “I really do care.” – and then claiming the press had read it wrong.
Not long after arriving at the White House, Donald Trump invited both of them to his private dining room situated in the West Wing. He welcomed them with the words: “What the hell were you thinking?”.
Both of her companions were surprised by her reaction. She was still very relaxed, unbothered, and even started to laugh after hearing her husband’s words.
It is a well-known fact that their relationship is not as perfect as they portray it publicly, so finding out about this side of them shouldn’t be surprising to anyone.
