#7 Betty Ford
On April 8th, 1918, Betty Ford was born in Chicago, Illinois. She and Gerald Ford married in 1948 and remained together till the former 38th president of the United States passed away in 2006. Her time as First Lady, from 1974 to 1977, lasted just three years, unlike the former first ladies.
Early on, she became aware of her influence and power as the first lady, and she wished to convey to women the importance of their voices. She received a breast cancer diagnosis after her husband started serving in the military.
Even though discussing one’s health was frowned upon at the time, she made public declarations about it. Her open admission gave many women the confidence and comfort to seek medical care.
She finally succeeded in kicking her own drug and alcohol addiction in 1982. She established the Betty Ford Center, a center for the treatment of addiction and substance misuse because she wanted to assist other people who were in similar circumstances to her.
