Covering the face or hair with a veil
The same Queen Victoria went for a long, pale, gauzy veil to complete her iconic wedding dress. It was a big part of women’s fashion at the time, but her pairing managed to remain one of the Western wedding traditions we still celebrate today.
However, Victoria wasn’t really the first bride to wear a veil. Lots of cultures and religions, such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism, used some sort of veil during wedding ceremonies for millennia.
Ancient Roman brides preferred bright yellow veils, which were considered to resemble a flame and symbolize light and warmth. Muslims often veil a bride’s face to show modesty and protect her from evil.
