12 Things You Should Never Say to a Flight Attendant

4. “Here, take my trash.”

This statement is all about timing. Yes, part of a flight attendant’s job is to collect trash to keep the cabin clean. But they do this during dedicated phases of the flight. Thrusting a dirty napkin, an empty cup, or a food wrapper at them while they are in the middle of another task is inconsiderate.

The worst times to do this are during boarding, the safety demonstration, or the critical periods of takeoff and landing. During these phases, they have a strict checklist of safety-related duties to perform. Their focus needs to be on securing the cabin, arming doors, and ensuring all passengers are seated and buckled. They are not in “service mode” at these times. Handing them trash is a distraction from tasks mandated by aviation authorities like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Even during mid-flight service, it’s best to wait. If they are pushing a beverage cart, their hands are full. Wait until they come through the aisle with a dedicated trash bag. That is the signal that they are ready and able to collect garbage. Forcing it on them at other times means they have to stop what they are doing, walk to the galley to dispose of your single item, and then return to their task. It’s highly inefficient.

The polite alternative is simple: hold onto your trash. Tuck it into the seat-back pocket in front of you temporarily. It won’t be for long. The crew will always conduct at least one, and on long-haul flights, several, trash collection rounds before landing. Patience is the key to respectful and smooth air travel.
