NYC is under siege
In New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul warned the public to “prepare for this over the long haul,” while New York City Mayor Eric Adams advised residents to limit all their outdoor activities as much as they can. The Federal Aviation Administration decided to pause some flights bound for LaGuardia Airport but also slowed plans to Newark Liberty, given the smoke that limited all visibility.
The smoke was also the reason why Dulles International Airport outside Washington had such terribly delayed arrivals. Schools in many other states canceled their sports and outdoor activities. Live horse racing competitions were canceled on Wednesday and Thursday at Delaware Park in Wilmington. The organizers of Global Running Day warned on their website about the toxic smoke, advising participants to closely monitor the air quality in their cities.
