To wear or not to wear makeup?
From their looks to the way they act, celebrities are expected to be flawless. However, some of them have decided to stop trying to look perfect in an attempt to show that nobody is perfect and to get more women to embrace their true self.
Nowadays it is perfectly normal to see celebrities dressed in casual clothes, female celebrities with imperfect manicure and… No makeup. Here we have a list of 10 celebrities who’ve decided to show us their makeup-free faces.
10 Celebrities Who Said “Bye-Bye” to Makeup
1. Alicia Keys
Alicia Augello Cook, also known as Alicia Keys, is an Afro-American singer living in the US. She’s been using makeup ever since she was a teenager, but decided to say “bye-bye” to it a few years ago, when she realized that she needed to wear makeup in order to feel confident.
To protest against the judgment women have to face because of their appearance, she launched the No makeup campaign on social media in 2016. To clarify everything, the artist stated that she doesn’t hate makeup. On the contrary, she loves her beauty products, but she became sick of the limitations implied by the society we live in.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
Growing up, Gwyneth Paltrow never wore makeup. She started using it after she began her career as an actress. However, she stopped using it as she prefers her clean face more. To support the no makeup look, she created GOOPGLOW, a beauty line which is part of her lifestyle brand and includes products meant to give the skin a youthful look.
Moreover, she also hosted a no makeup party, where none of the celebrities invited were allowed to wear makeup. Along with the invitations for the party, Gwyneth also sent some of the beauty
products from her beauty line, such as an overnight glow peel, a body luminizer and a morning skin superpowder.
The kit that included these products were also displayed throughout the party.
3. Shailene Woodley
Just as all the other celebrities on this list, Shailene Woodley also stopped wearing makeup. However, her reason is a little unexpected: she did it because she once looked at a picture of herself in a magazine and realized that the person in the picture wasn’t her true self.
Thinking that young girls will look at her pictures and compare themselves to her, just as she did as a teenager, she decided to adopt a natural look. She also stated that she doesn’t like to wear
makeup that much and that she wanted to be herself.
4. Lupita Nyong’o
During an interview with Essence magazine, Lupita Nyong’o stated that she only wears makeup when she’s on the red carpet and occasionally when she goes out. An aspect worth mentioning is the fact that, as a teenager, she was banned from wearing any makeup, which helped her love herself as she is.
During her interview with Lucky Magazine, she also stated that she sees makeup as an accessory, and she doesn’t use it to hide herself. Although she didn’t give up on makeup entirely, she deserves her place on this list, as she tries to wear makeup as rarely as possible.
5. Cameron Diaz
After she quit being an actress, Cameron Diaz also stopped conforming to the Hollywood beauty standards. During an interview with Michelle Visage, she stated that she doesn’t think much about how she looks. Which is a little surprising, given the fact that she used to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, an act that she now considers as being “toxic”.
She also said that she rarely washes her face. The star also doesn’t mind aging: “What I found was that aging isn’t about getting old, it’s about LIVING”.
6. Beyonce
Beyonce is one of the most beloved female singers. Despite the fact that she is watched by so many people, she isn’t afraid to leave the house without makeup, and the pictures of her no makeup looks became an inspiration for other women.
In her cover story for the September issue of Vogue, Beyonce declared: “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies.”
7. Leandra Medine
Also known as Man Repeller, Leandra Medine is known for both her blog named “Repeller” and the fact that she doesn’t wear makeup. As she herself stated in one of the articles she wrote on her blog, “Why I Don’t Wear Makeup”, she received a lot of mean comments regarding her looks.
Many people told her that she would look better with makeup on, and someone even went as far as to call her “really ugly”. At first, she was bothered by what others said about herself, but then she realized that she shouldn’t care about what others think.
In the same article, she also mentioned that her mother’s words helped her understand that she truly doesn’t need makeup to be beautiful. She quoted her mother, who asked her why she shouldn’t use makeup, as it is meant to enhance the beauty of a woman.
After thinking about it, she concluded that she doesn’t use makeup because she’s lazy and prefers her natural looks, but she likes to take care of her skin.
8. Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid is a famous American model and a Victoria’s Secret angel. Wearing makeup is part of a model’s work, so Gigi doesn’t mind doing it, but she rarely wears makeup when she doesn’t work. Most of her selfies and the pictures taken by paparazzi show her with little or no makeup on.
As she said during her live on Instagram with Erin Parsons, the star sees makeup as a tool to help you feel your best but also to accept your face.
9. Bella Thorne
While promoting her book “The life of a wannabe mogul: mental disarray”, Bella Thorne stated that she doesn’t wear makeup unless she gets paid for it. The star also said that she always requires – as part of the contract – to do her own makeup.
This requirement is related to her cystic acne issues. She also got dermatitis once, as a result of her skin being allergic to a lot of products.
10. Zendaya
Zendaya is one of the most beloved young actresses and she is known for not conforming to society’s standards. During her interview with Allure, Zendaya stated that applying makeup is therapeutic for her and she enjoys doing it.
However, she also loves to show her makeup free face. The star also takes care of her skin, and she doesn’t mind going the extra mile when it comes to her skincare routine, meaning that she likes to use a lot of skincare products.
Even though not all the celebrities on this list said “bye-bye” to make up for good, what matters is that, despite knowing that they are going to be criticized for their decision to not wear makeup, they still decided to do it.
Seeing such famous figures refuse to conform to unreasonable beauty standards and try to show that nobody is perfect should be a reason for other women and teenage girls to stop comparing themselves to others and embrace their true, natural self.
