#7 Kathryn Joosten
When Kathryn Joosten began consistently working in Hollywood’s notoriously youth-centric industry in the mid-1990s, she was already in her fifties. In 1980, she began acting after discovering she wasn’t pursuing her dreams.
Despite having a late start, Joosten made a career by portraying unique yet regularly memorable characters in popular TV shows. Some of the shows she has appeared in include “ER,” “Roseanne,” “Seinfeld,” “Frasier,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “The X Files.” Later, she would extend that list to include shows like “Will & Grace,” “Gilmore Girls,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” In other words, Joosten most likely had an appearance in any popular show from the 1990s or 2000s.
In Season 1 of “Scrubs,” she played a woman who refused medical intervention for kidney failure. This was her most notable guest role. Fans often pick the episode “My Old Lady” as one of their favorites.
When “My Old Lady” initially aired in 2001, Joosten began receiving treatment for lung cancer while filming the last season of “Desperate Housewives.” In the series finale, McCluskey, Kathryn’s character, passed away since she was not able to play anymore. Two weeks after that show premiered, on June 2, 2012, Joosten passed away at the age of 72.
