5. The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Cathedral catacombs
Are you ready to talk about the last catacombs on this list of hidden underground places in NYC? Then let’s say a couple of things about the 200-year-old Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Soho.
What’s incredible about this basilica is that while it sits over ancient catacombs where the public is typically not allowed, there’s an official 90-minute tour that can take you through the spooky lair beyond the ground.
Plenty of important New Yorkers are laid to rest here, including General Thomas Eckert, a brave man who was an important adviser to Abraham Lincoln, and the Delmonico family; Bishop John Connolly, the first resident bishop of New York; and Honest John Kelly of Tammany Hall.
