2. The Freedom Tunnel
If you’re into spooky things, you’ll love these hidden places in NYC. The Freedom Tunnel is located beneath Riverside Park and has long been a fixture of the city, and many urban explorers love to adventure there.
Many carriage trains operated through the tunnel until 1980, and when the typical operations on the track ended, the stretch became one of the best places where graffiti artists could make their magic.
If you were wondering why the tunnel has the word freedom in its name, the rumor says that there was a fantastic graffiti artist, Chris “Freedom” Pape, a talented man who made some amazing work in the space.
There is a book called “The Mole People” by Jennifer Toth, which was published in 1995 and offers a terrifying glimpse inside the vast shantytowns that sprung up all throughout the tube.
In 1991, Amtrak started using the tunnel again, and they started kicking out passengers from the secret path in large numbers. Urban explorers continue to flock to the Freedom Tunnel, thinking that they’ll find something amazing, but it is no longer the underground metropolis that it once was.
