On January 8, 2021, Twitter announced that it had permanently suspended Donald Trump’s account. The social media giant raised concern over the risk of the then-US president inciting further violence. As a result, Facebook, Reddit, Youtube, Vimeo, and Shopify joined Twitter by limiting or suspending Trump’s access to their platforms.
It’s known that the former US president used Twitter to spread misinformation, especially during the COVID pandemic, and incite violence. His historic romance with the platform began in 2009, when his PR team suggested using social media to promote his book.
Since the username @DonaldTrump had already been taken by a parody account, the multibillionaire had to choose another one—@realDonaldTrump.
When he sought the Republican nomination in 2015, Trump used his Twitter account more like a weapon meant to savage his opponents. Once he became President, his account became what his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski named “the greatest bully pulpit that has ever existed.”
