7. South Carolina
- Population:Â 5,118,425
- Violent crimes (per 100,000 people):Â 531
- Homicides: 549
Despite having a high rate of violent crimes (531 per 100,000 people), South Carolina had only a 3.8% increase in 2020 compared to 2019. However, there are other things that account for this place ranking 7th out of the 10 most dangerous states in the US.
For example, it recorded around 10.5 murders for every 100,000 citizens, the 5th highest rate across the country. On top of this, the 549 reported murders are higher than in many other US states with substantially greater populations.
Spartanburg is considered to be the most dangerous city in South Carolina, with 1,200 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Although Charleston itself doesn’t rank among the most unsafe cities in the state, North Charleston did record 960 violent crimes for every 100,000 people.
