Question No. 13: The citizenship test doesn’t overlook some bad things that happened in America’s past, such as the displacement of Native Americans and slavery. As a result, future citizens are expected to know some things about the country’s original population, for instance. One possible question may be, “Name one American Indian tribe in the US.”
Answer: Currently, there are 573 federally recognized tribes, and all are correct answers, but four of the largest are the Navajo, the Chippewa, the Sioux, and the Cherokee.
Question No. 14: The citizenship test also covers US geography. Besides being able to name the bordering oceans and biggest rivers of the US, another question may be, “Name one US territory.”
Answer: The five American territories are Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
Question No. 15: The division of power between the state and federal governments is a key aspect of the US government. So, two questions on the citizenship test are: “What is one power of the states?” and “What is one power of the federal government?”
Answer: The federal government has the power to: make treaties, create an army, declare war, and print money. State governments have the power to: provide protection through the police; provide schooling and education; provide safety services; approve zoning and land use; and issue driver’s licenses.
