In the annals of Trump’s tweets, nothing compares to the one posted on May 31, 2017: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.”
The former president tweeted again later that day: “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’??? Enjoy!” The world obeyed. The bizarre word—which seemed to be a typo for „coverage”—was meme-ified at lightning speed and became just as annoying, inspiring a racehorse name, merchandise, and even an interdiction on “COVFEFE” license plates in Georgia.
While foolish, the reaction showed Trump’s ability to inspire love in his supporters and confound his critics. To the former group, liberals laughing at his spelling looked like elitist pedants criticizing a man who had proudly named himself the savior of the “poorly educated”.
