3. Punching CNN
In 2017, Trump tweeted a violent, doctored video of him beating CNN. The footage was real, but the “fight” took place back in 2007, during a scripted WWE match. To some, the video Trump tweeted was a madcap joke. To others, however, it was an unsettling threat to journalists.
Nevertheless, its real significance was its origin: it was picked from Trump’s wide and virulent online fanbase without the knowledge of its creator.
As a result, extremists took notice. Over the following three years, they got into some kind of competition to draw attention and drive traffic to their communities. They basically injected their symbols and ideas into the Twitter feeds of Trump’s millions of followers.
