6. Harry S. Truman

Harry S. Truman served as the 33rd president of the US. He was sworn in after Franklin D. Roosevelt died unexpectedly on April 12, 1945. Before becoming the chief of state, Truman served as vice president for only 82 days.

Truman left a mark on our history by dropping the atomic bomb on Japan, which put an end to World War II. His famous policy, the Truman Doctrine, pledged American support for democracies against communist threats. He also initiated US involvement in the Korean War.

Why did Truman rate so well among historians? His international relations, crisis leadership, and pursuit of equal justice for all.
