6. Rage Against the Machine
Known for their lyrics taking ait at cultural imperialism, government oppression, and corporate America, Rage Against the Machine became huge with the song “Killing in the Name.” But if the band’s message were, quite literally, revolutionary, it was equally matched by the accompanying music. In fact, the band’s melding of funk and hip-hop with heavy rock was unlike anything at the time.
But let’s see how the group’s members reacted when a man went too far in assaulting a woman. In 1997, Zack de la Rocha stopped an Arizona concert because a man had ripped the shirt off a woman in the crowd. “Women (…) shouldn’t have come to this show and been afraid of that sh** there,” the musician said. He concluded by saying that they will stop the concert if the incident happens again.
